Buddhism meets 12 Steps and other solutions
From the first handshake, meeting one another at every point, they synergize. The Higher power of 12 Steps wells up exponentially. Walking the path together, the Buddha addresses suffering, saying it is primarily caused by craving. Alcoholics and all addicts know, too well, how their cravings cause suffering. The possibility of a cure lies ahead. The multitude of connection points includes: meditation practices, notions such as letting go, all things are impermanent, diminished importance of a separate self, and discovery of our interconnectedness. These are but the first steps. Climb aboard as we embark on a journey together, building better lives for all as one.
This is not meant as a replacement, but as an enhancement of the myriad of powerful tools in 12 Step activities, and those of other successful strategies. Not limited to alcohol or drugs, we welcome all who would confront the grip of addictive, compulsive cravings and actions, including appetites, relational issues, and more. Further, we stand with the seasoned practitioners who continue to explore ways to nurture lives of integrity. It is not therapy. That is a whole other field of valuable practices by an expert, certified professionals. We are fellow addicted persons who understand and have found this ancient practice to be abundantly effective today in dealing specifically with the demons of addiction.
Peer-led, we open with a lightly Buddhist gesture, then a group meditation. The night’s leader may read a passage from a book, speak for an interval to one of the 12 Steps, or open another topic related to recovery. Sharing follows. We take care to speak from and listen with the heart. Another light touch of Buddhism closes the meeting.
May all beings be freed from suffering.
